Mr. Jaswinder Singh obtained his initial music training
from his father, before joining the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya where
he pursued his education in music.
At a very young age, Jaswinder was influenced by the beauty of the
ghazal. He took to listening and learning from masters such as Mehdi
Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh. Jaswinder's favourite singer
was Jagjit Singh, and in due course he became a part of the Jagjit
Singh gharana. Jaswinder is not only a talented singer but also a
versatile composer.
Jagjit Singh provided guidance to Jaswinder during his formative years,
and in the year 2000, Jagjit presented Jaswinder's first ghazal album
titled "Aage Aage Dekhiye" which was released by HMV. This album announced
the arrival of a gifted singer and composer on the ghazal arena, and
included the works of Meer, Nadeem Parmar, Farhat Shehzad and Faiz
Ratlami.
Since then, Jaswinder has been a favourite among the South Asian community
in North America. He frequently performs at ghazal mehfils in New
York, Chicago, Atlanta, Toronto, and other major cities in the US
and Canada.
On many occasions, Jaswinder has accompanied Jagjit Singh on stage.
Jaswinder was part of Jagjit's team of musicians during the latter's
US tour in the year 2000. Subsequently during 2001, Jaswinder performed
with Jagjit at Leicester, Gravesend, and other centres in the UK.
In February 2003, Jaswinder received the music commendation award
in the Ghazal category from Sangam Kala Group at a glittering ceremony
in Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.
The second ghazal album "Tamanna" composed and sung by Jaswinder demonstrates
his coming of age as a consummate practician of the art. This album
features melodies written by Nadeem Parmar, Farhat Shehzad, Rajinder
Singh Jolly and others. |
